Danise Baird, the wife of Indiana Republican Rep. Jim Baird, died early Sunday morning from complications related to the 15 fractures she sustained in a hit-and-run car crash on January 5. She was married to the congressman for 59 years.
Their son Beau Baird posted the moment plainly on Facebook, "3/1/26 6:31:10 am", the date and time his mother passed. No words beyond that. None were needed.
The congressman's office confirmed Danise's passing in a statement Sunday morning, as reported by the New York Post:
"Congressman Baird and Danise were married for 59 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service. A devoted wife and loving mother of three, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed. We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time."
The Bairds were high school sweethearts. They raised three children together. When Jim Baird left his Indiana legislative seat for the U.S. House, their son Beau claimed it, a family whose commitment to public service runs generational and deep.
The couple was returning to Washington, D.C. on January 5 when they were involved in what President Trump described as a "pretty bad" car crash ahead of a House Republican policy retreat the following day. At the time, both were expected to recover.
Rep. Baird, 80, was released from the hospital on January 6 and wore a neck brace for several weeks. Danise's injuries were far more severe, a staggering 15 breaks and fractures. She was discharged on January 12.
Beau Baird had been sharing updates primarily about his father, noting that his mother was "a very private person" with "a long recovery ahead of her." On February 1, he posted that Danise had taken her "first assisted steps" since the crash, writing that the family knew "there's still a road ahead."
That road ended Sunday morning.
Members of Congress and state legislators offered their condolences. New York Rep. Elise Stefanik spoke to the kind of people the Bairds are:
"Jim's wife Danise was often by his side as he worked so hard in Congress on behalf of his constituents. They are salt of the earth people and Jim and his family have sacrificed so much for our country."
Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon reflected on the couple's nearly six decades together:
"Our sympathies and condolences to Jim and his family. We admire them both and their 59 years of marriage. I enjoyed getting to know Danise, and we'll hold Jim in our prayers."
Indiana State Rep. Jake Teshka, who called Jim a good friend and Beau the same, asked for prayer:
"May the peace of God which surpasses all understanding wash over them today and in the weeks and months ahead."
Washington grinds through people. It chews up marriages, fractures families, turns service into sacrifice in ways the public rarely sees. The Bairds weathered it for decades, high school sweethearts who built a life around faith and duty, who sent a husband and father to Congress and a son to the statehouse.
Danise Baird was, by her family's own account, a private woman. She didn't seek the spotlight that comes with a congressional spouse's life. She was the foundation. Foundations don't ask for attention. They hold everything up.
Fifty-nine years of marriage. Three children. A family built on the things that matter most and last the longest. The Baird family deserves the prayers they've asked for, and the space to grieve a woman who clearly earned every one of them.
