Alabama teen charged with murder after allegedly stabbing mother to death, critically wounding father

 July 7, 2026, NEWS

A 17-year-old boy in Daphne, Alabama, allegedly stabbed his mother to death and left his father fighting for his life after an argument over disciplinary actions turned into a scene of domestic carnage on Sunday night, prosecutors said.

Samantha Baker, 37, was pronounced dead outside the family's home with multiple stab wounds. Her husband, Lance Baker, 46, a U.S. Army Reserve Battalion Commander, was life-flighted to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Their teenage son was arrested at the scene, charged with murder and attempted murder, and is being prosecuted as an adult.

A judge set his bond at $1 million on Monday. Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney Patrick Doggett told WKRG afterward that the teenager represents a "danger to himself and the public at this point." The investigation, Doggett added, "remains in its early stages."

A family's Sunday night shattered

The Bakers had built what looked, from the outside, like a stable military family life. They married in October 2012, moved from Mississippi to Daphne in 2016, and settled into a $314,000 home. Lance Baker had logged more than 26 years in the Army Reserve and commanded the 1184th Deployment and Distribution Support Battalion. Samantha Baker served six years in the Army National Guard and Reserve before working as a realtor. The couple had two sons together.

What prosecutors described as an argument over "disciplinary actions" ended that stability.

Captain Justin Correa of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office told reporters that investigators believe the dispute between the boy and his parents "turned violent" inside the family's residence Sunday night. Both parents were stabbed inside the home. Both fled, to separate neighbors' houses, seeking help.

The suspect followed them outside and continued the attack.

A neighbor who spoke with WALA recounted hearing Lance Baker screaming as he ran from house to house. The neighbor said Baker cried out: "please help me... I don't want to die."

Correa described the father's desperate flight in plain terms:

"He was running to houses trying to get some help."

Samantha Baker did not survive. Officers arriving at the scene found her outside the family home with multiple stab wounds and pronounced her dead. Lance Baker was airlifted to a hospital. As of Monday, he remained in critical condition, though Correa said he was "hopefully going to survive."

The 911 call

After the attack, the teenager locked himself inside the family home and dialed 911. He told dispatchers he had gotten into an argument with his parents and "believed he had stabbed one to death." He said he was "unsure" about the condition of his other parent.

Deputies arrested him at the scene without further incident.

Correa, speaking at a Monday press briefing, acknowledged the weight of what investigators had encountered:

"It is really sad. It's very sad for this family, having to deal with it. From everything we can see at this point, this was an isolated domestic incident that really just got out of control."

Charged as an adult with murder and attempted murder

The teenager appeared in a Baldwin County courtroom Monday for a bond hearing. Prosecutors secured the $1 million bond and made clear they intend to try him as an adult on both charges, murder in the death of his mother and attempted murder for the stabbing of his father.

Doggett, the assistant district attorney, offered no details about what specific "disciplinary actions" had sparked the argument. That question, what exactly a parent said or did that preceded a lethal response from a 17-year-old, remains unanswered. So does the question of where the couple's second son was during the attack.

No primary documents from the case, charging papers, warrants, or court filings, have been made public. The name of the hospital treating Lance Baker has not been released. No next court date has been announced.

A military family's service record

The Bakers' combined military service spans more than three decades. Lance Baker's career in the Army Reserve stretched beyond 26 years, and he had spent nine years working in the physical security and security management sector. Samantha Baker's six years in the Guard and Reserve preceded her civilian career in real estate.

They married when their sons were already part of the family, the boys attended the 2012 wedding. Public records cited in reporting on the case show the family relocated to Daphne from Mississippi in 2016.

None of that history insulated them from what happened Sunday night.

What remains unanswered

The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office has characterized the stabbing as an "isolated domestic incident." But several basic questions remain open. Prosecutors have not specified the nature of the disciplinary dispute. It is unclear whether the teenager had any prior record or history of violent behavior. The precise location where Samantha Baker died, whether at a neighbor's doorstep or back near the family home, is ambiguous in available accounts. And Lance Baker's prognosis beyond "critical" has not been updated.

The case now moves forward in Baldwin County with a 17-year-old facing adult charges for allegedly taking his mother's life and nearly taking his father's, all, prosecutors say, because his parents tried to discipline him.

When a child's response to a parent saying "no" is a knife, something has gone wrong long before Sunday night. The courts will sort out the legal questions. The harder ones belong to a culture that keeps producing moments like this.
