Subaru recalls more than 541,000 vehicles after weight-rating labels printed with wrong numbers

Subaru of America is pulling back more than half a million vehicles because their factory certification labels carry the wrong gross axle weight rating, a number that tells owners how much load an axle can safely handle. Get it wrong, and a driver hauling gear, passengers, or a trailer could unknowingly push past the vehicle's real limits.

The recall covers 541,237 vehicles across four model lines, federal regulators confirmed through a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notice. The affected models span nearly a decade of production: 2019, 2026 Ascent SUVs, 2025, 2026 Forester and Forester Hybrid crossovers, and the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid.

Every one of the 541,237 vehicles contains the defect. Subaru says it is not aware of any crashes or injuries tied to the mislabeled ratings, but the sheer scale of the error raises a basic question: How does a major automaker print the wrong weight capacity on more than half a million vehicles before anyone catches it?

What the misprinted labels actually mean

The gross axle weight rating, or GAWR, is not a suggestion. It is the load-carrying capacity of an axle system, as NHTSA defines it. Certification labels stamped on every new vehicle sold in the United States are supposed to give owners an accurate, at-a-glance reference for safe loading.

The New York Post reported that NHTSA recall documentation warns the misprinted GAWR may show a higher weight capacity than the axle can actually support. That distinction matters. A label that understates capacity is conservative, annoying, maybe, but not dangerous. A label that overstates capacity invites overloading, poor handling, and tire failure.

NHTSA recall documentation put it plainly:

"Subaru warns that the incorrect label could result in the vehicle being overloaded, suggesting the printed GAWR may be higher than the actual rating of the scale."

For families towing boats, hauling camping equipment, or loading an Ascent to its advertised limits, the difference between the printed number and the real number could be the difference between a safe trip and a blowout on the highway.

A sticker fix, not a mechanical repair

Subaru's remedy is straightforward, if underwhelming. The company plans to mail new certification labels to owners along with instructions on how to place the corrected sticker over the existing one. Owners who would rather not handle it themselves can take their vehicle to a Subaru dealer and have the label replaced at no charge.

Letters informing owners of the issue are scheduled to go out on August 25, 2026. The recall carries NHTSA ID 26V436000 and Subaru's internal recall number WRH-26.

NHTSA notified Subaru of the labeling problem in May. The gap between that notification and the August mailing date means affected owners could spend months driving vehicles whose weight ratings they cannot trust, assuming they even know about the recall before the letter arrives.

Second major Subaru recall this year

This is not a one-off stumble. The New York Post noted that the labeling recall marks Subaru's second major callback in 2026. The first involved nearly 70,000 vehicles recalled over fuel leak and fire risks, a far more immediately dangerous defect, but one that also pointed to quality-control gaps in Subaru's production pipeline.

Two large-scale recalls in a single calendar year is not a good look for a brand that has built its reputation on reliability and safety. Subaru owners tend to be loyal, often fiercely so. They buy the brand for its all-wheel-drive capability, its durability in harsh weather, and its consistently strong crash-test ratings. A misprinted label does not undo all of that, but it does suggest that someone, somewhere in the manufacturing chain, was not paying close enough attention.

Models and years covered

The recall spans a wide production window:

  • 2019, 2026 Subaru Ascent
  • 2025, 2026 Subaru Forester
  • 2025, 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid
  • 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The Ascent's inclusion across eight model years is notable. That means the labeling error was either introduced early and never caught, or it recurred across multiple production runs. Neither explanation inspires confidence.

What owners still don't know

Several questions remain unanswered. Neither NHTSA's recall notice nor Subaru's public statements have clarified the exact magnitude of the error, how much higher the printed GAWR is compared to the actual safe rating. Owners also do not know whether the recall applies to vehicles already in service, vehicles sitting on dealer lots, or both.

It is also unclear whether NHTSA has independently verified Subaru's claim that no crashes or injuries have resulted from the mislabeling, or whether that assertion rests entirely on Subaru's own reporting. Federal regulators generally rely on manufacturer data in the early stages of a recall, which means the "no injuries" line carries less weight than it might appear to at first glance.

And there is the timing question. NHTSA flagged the issue in May. Owner notification letters will not go out until late August. For a defect that could lead to overloading and crash risk, a three-month lag between discovery and consumer notification is worth scrutiny, especially when the fix is nothing more than a replacement sticker.

The regulatory picture

Federal law requires automakers to notify NHTSA and vehicle owners promptly when a safety defect is identified. The certification label itself is a regulatory requirement, it exists precisely so that owners, mechanics, and inspectors can verify a vehicle's rated capacities without consulting a manual or calling a dealer.

When the label itself is wrong, the entire system of consumer-facing safety information breaks down. A driver checking the sticker on the doorjamb before loading up for a road trip is doing exactly what regulators want. If the number printed there is too high, the driver's diligence is rewarded with false assurance.

Accountability starts with the basics

A certification label is one of the simplest components on a vehicle. It is not a turbocharger. It is not a fuel injector. It is a sticker with numbers on it. And Subaru got those numbers wrong on more than half a million cars and SUVs spanning multiple model years.

No one was hurt, and that is genuinely good news. But the fact that a misprinted weight rating can persist across years of production, across multiple model lines, without internal quality checks catching it before a federal regulator does, says something about the state of manufacturing oversight.

Consumers deserve better than a corrective sticker mailed months after the problem was identified. They deserve to know that the safety information printed on their vehicles was right the first time.

Half a million vehicles. One wrong number. And the fix is another sticker. If that does not concentrate minds in Subaru's quality department, nothing will.
