Trump fires back at Omar and Tlaib after Democrats shout down State of the Union address

 February 28, 2026, NEWS

Rep. Ilhan Omar screamed "You are a murderer" at President Trump during the State of the Union. Rep. Rashida Tlaib wore a button reading "F--- ICE." Both repeatedly interrupted the address, shouted objections from their seats, and then walked out early.

This is what passes for Democratic statesmanship in the people's chamber.

Trump responded Wednesday on Truth Social with characteristic force, calling Omar and Tlaib "lunatics" and writing:

"We should send them back from where they came."

The post also took aim at actor Robert De Niro, who had appeared on "MS NOW" the day before urging Americans to "resist" Trump. According to Fox News Digital, when reached for comment on Trump's broadside, De Niro offered a single-word response: "Epstein."

What happened in the chamber

The State of the Union is one of the few remaining civic rituals that Americans of all political persuasions once treated with a baseline of gravity. The president addresses a joint session of Congress. Members may disagree, loudly, even, but the institution itself commands a minimum of decorum.

Omar and Tlaib apparently didn't get that memo. Or they got it and tore it up.

Omar repeatedly interrupted Trump's remarks on border security and homeland funding, shouting:

"You're a liar."

"You are a murderer."

Tlaib shouted her own objections, including a reference to Alex Pretti, an armed man shot and killed by federal agents amid immigration protest chaos in Minneapolis:

"Alex wasn't a criminal."

Tlaib also wore a message reading "STAND WITH SURVIVORS RELEASE THE FILES", an apparent reference to materials related to late convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Later in the evening, as Trump recounted the raid on Caracas that captured Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, both Omar and Tlaib departed the chamber.

They didn't just protest the speech. They abandoned the room.

The performance, not the principle

There's a pattern here worth naming. Omar and Tlaib didn't stand up during a committee hearing and press the administration on policy. They didn't file legislation. They didn't demand a floor vote. They screamed at the President of the United States during a nationally televised address and then stormed out before it was over.

This wasn't dissent. It was theater, designed for clips, not constituents.

The left will frame this as brave truth-telling. But consider what they actually disrupted. Trump was discussing border security and Department of Homeland Security funding, topics that poll as top concerns for American voters across party lines. He accused Democrats of cutting DHS funding. Omar's response wasn't a policy rebuttal. It was a tantrum.

Tlaib's "F--- ICE" button tells you everything about where her priorities sit. Not with the communities ravaged by transnational gang activity. Not with the legal immigrants who followed the rules. With a slogan. With a pose.

Trump's counterpunch

The President's Truth Social post was vintage Trump, blunt, personal, and unapologetic. He described the scene in the chamber this way:

"When you watch Low IQ Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, as they screamed uncontrollably last night at the very elegant State of the Union, such an important and beautiful event, they had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people."

He continued:

"LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalized."

Trump also looped in De Niro, who had broken down in tears during the address:

"They should actually get on a boat with Trump Deranged Robert De Niro, another sick and demented person with, I believe, an extremely Low IQ, who has absolutely no idea what he is doing or saying, some of which is seriously CRIMINAL!"

"When I watched him break down in tears last night, much like a child would do, I realized that he may be even sicker than Crazy Rosie O'Donnell, who is right now in Ireland trying to figure out how to come back into our beautiful United States."

This is not the first time Trump has told Omar and Tlaib to "go back." In 2019, he directed similar comments at progressive Democratic lawmakers, including both women. Omar immigrated to the United States from Somalia as a child refugee and became a U.S. citizen in 2000. Tlaib was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Palestinian immigrant parents.

The media will spend the next 72 hours litigating Trump's language. They will not spend a single segment asking why two sitting members of Congress thought it was appropriate to turn the State of the Union into a shouting match.

The real question nobody's asking

Here's what gets lost in the outrage cycle. The State of the Union exists for a reason. It's the one night a year when the executive branch formally addresses the legislative branch and, through them, the American people. It is not a protest rally. It is not a campaign event. It is a constitutional tradition.

When members of Congress shout down the president, any president, they don't damage him. They damage the institution they swore an oath to serve. They tell the country that the rules apply only when their side holds the gavel.

Omar and Tlaib didn't speak truth to power. They performed outrage for an audience that already agreed with them. There's nothing courageous about screaming into a room full of cameras when you know every progressive media outlet will call you a hero by morning.

Courage would be staying in the chamber. Courage would be listening to the parts you disagree with and responding through the legislative process. Courage would be voting, debating, and doing the unglamorous work of governance.

But that doesn't trend on social media.

Trump fired back because that's what Trump does. The more interesting question is what Omar and Tlaib thought they were accomplishing, and whether the Democratic Party has any interest in reining in members who treat the nation's most solemn civic proceedings like an open mic night.

The chamber heard them. The country saw them. And not a single mind was changed.
